Thank you to DoorDash for the complimentary family meal!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been at home, working, cleaning or just tearing my hair out over our busy life when a craving hits me. Sushi, hibachi, maybe even a juicy real hamburger and a Coke. But the delivery list in our neck of the woods is a big sparse. Pizza (from a few locations), Chinese aaaaand, that’s about it. If we want a restaurant meal from either a big company or a yummy local eatery, we need to pack up the car and go to them. With two kids at dinnertime (what I call the witching hour), that’s not always an option.
But I reeeeeeealllly want Hibachi right now. A labor-intensive show of a dinner, and it’s not a fast dinner either. So no hibachi for me. Or maybe there’s hope? I got wind of a small startup company in Atlanta called DoorDash, expanding rapidly into the northern suburbs where we reside. I downloaded the free app and browsed lots of restaurants that were near me. DoorDash is a lot like a courier for restaurants, bringing you a hot meal from your eatery of choice.
Chase and I chose a yummy looking hibachi place, noted the delivery time and perused the menu. It was super easy to choose what we wanted, make custom notes and load up our dinner cart. I noted that it was also possible for me to get hibachi and Chase to get something else from another restaurant if he was craving pasta, per say. It was easy to checkout right in the app and I got a free delivery for my first order.
When you’re ready to close out your order, make sure you use any DoorDash promo code you have available (Use DoorDash Promo code REDHEAD for$5 off any order for first-time DoorDash order in the Atlanta area. There is no maximum on the order. All codes are effective until July 1, 2016) and enter your payment method. The app estimated my delivery time (I am out the outskirts of the delivery area, so I made sure to leave plenty of time before we wanted dinner) and allowed me to leave my delivery driver a tip. It even told me who to look for at my door.
And while I always track my pizza delivery, DoorDash didn’t leave me hanging. I could see the progress of my meal, and even got a notification when my driver was pulling into my driveway. Oh! Hi, Madelon! You have my eats, and I am happy! She was prompt, courteous, official and everything was piping hot. Super fresh, too.
Selfie for posterity, right before we dug in.
Isn’t this great? I ordered from the app, and then did nothing else. My meal was couriered to me, hotter and faster than a pizza guy. What I really love is that I can get meals and cuisines that aren’t pizza or regular Chinese food. The delivery door is metaphorically open wide.
The restaurant we ordered from got everything right, and we stuffed ourselves silly, having enough leftovers for lunch the next day.
Now that I can have a restaurant meal at home without having to lug the kids, wait in line or forego my Netflix and sweatpants, I know what I’m going to be doing more often; opening DoorDash.
It should be noted that Scarlett body-screamed at me to try my dinner. I gave her some lightly fried rice with veggies and eggs, and she woofed it down. The peas and carrots were the first to go, followed by handfuls of egg. The look you see here was a pensive moment of, “Do I like this taste? Hmm… YES! Yes I do!” I almost didn’t get another forkfull for 15 minutes while she feasted on my meal.
A bit about DoorDash:
DoorDash is a food delivery service startup, delivering menu items to you from almost any restaurant nearby. It’s great for busy folks, and a nice way to have a restaurant meal when you don’t have time to cook. The list includes casual to fine dining and national chains and locally-owned restaurants. It’s a great mix.
